Description
MOTS-c is a 16-amino acid mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded within the 12S rRNA region of mitochondrial DNA. Unlike most peptides, it is encoded by the mitochondrial genome itself, making it a unique signaling molecule between mitochondria and the cell nucleus.
Research applications include:
• Metabolic regulation — studied as an AMPK activator in cellular and animal models, with effects on glucose utilization and insulin sensitivity
• Exercise mimetic research — animal studies have shown metabolic changes similar to physical exercise, making it of interest in exercise physiology research
• Aging and longevity — examined for its potential role in age-related metabolic decline and mitochondrial function
• Obesity models — explored in high-fat diet models for effects on adiposity and energy homeostasis
